El TerraTix bags global gold with PagSOILbok
Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus’s (PSHS-CVC) Team El TerraTix bags an international gold award with their innovative project called PagSOILbok in the recently concluded Shell NXplorers Bright Idea Challenge 2021.
The team composed of Edan Viel Aguada, Hadiya Andoy, Zena Yelena Shimmery Dellomos, Joshua Robert Martin, and Prince Angelo Rivera along with coach Lyndon Lazaro competed against 150 teams from 17 countries but ultimately achieved gold in the Exceptional NXplorers Project by a student team category.
“PagSOILbok is a soil testing device connected to a mobile application. The device will test the soil for its NPK content and pH level; in turn, the results are displayed through the application. Those said results will then be used by the application to analyze problems found in the soil and generate solutions to those found problems.” Zena Dellomos said.
It is stated in the team’s article how this project is significant, for it saves energy and money, optimizes crop production, diagnoses plant culture problems, and protects the environment from contamination caused by excess fertilizers.
El Terratix aims to provide solutions on how to improve soil quality, as well as inform the users about the soil’s viability that can benefit them in producing healthier crops and plants.
Zena added how they started planning this project before the academic year started, with the help of what they’ve learned in the Shell NXplorers workshop.
The said team thought of solving soil degradation by using each member’s ideas on what the most pressing problem is when it comes to farming.
According to the team’s page, its entry naming “pagSOILbok” is named after SOIL and pagsubok, the Filipino term for ‘to test.’
The unforgettable remark of Team El TerraTix aiming for the gold award was acknowledged last January 29, 2022.
